IBEW History Local 529 History The International Brotherhood of Electrical Wokers Local 529 was chartered on July 3, 1947 in Saskatoon. Eleven founding members signed the charter. The International had used Local number 529 three times prior. Two times the local went defunct and once amalgamated with local 659. Local 529 Saskatoon developed independently and did not come out of any other organizations or locals. Local 529's jurisdiction covered all outside work in the province and all inside work between the 51st and 53rd parallel. On July 1, 1951 Local 1717 Prince Albert was born. Local 1717 covered north of the 53rd parallel bordered on the east by the Province of Manitoba and by the west line of range 7, west of the second meridian. This area was specifically carved out to Manitoba's Local for work at Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting in Flin Flon. March 1, 1971 saw the amalgamation of local 1717 and 529. The Local was now 529 operating with a two-unit-system. The jurisdictional boundaries remained with the appropriate unit. The Local experienced three strikes in 1968, 1974, and 1982 and one legislated arbitration in 1970. The year 1982, as it turned out, became a pivotal point in history. This is the year the unions gained large increases to their collective agreements and the Provincial Government changed to the P.C party. This combined with a construction depression, our union suffered a major loss of our contractors and membership. One other notable is that out union office suffered smoke and water damage in the February 29, 1980 building trades office fire. Presently (2006) Local 529's membership in both units is about 245.
